Playing Active Careers

One of my goals with this uberhood is to create active careers, in other words, I want to be able to take my Sims to a specific lot where I can pretend to play with them while they are at work. This will be a very fun way to make all the Sims from the uberhood mingle and interact at their workplace. I also wanted to add some rules to make career progression harder, since it’s a bit too easy in my opinion especially with my long lifespan.

General Career Rules

Here are the general set of principles that will apply to all careers. Each career will also have specific rules that you can check out below.

1 – No more unlimited employment slots.

Every job position must be linked to a specific employer, business or community lot. If all positions in a career are filled then no new Sim can enter that career. Even careers that are not played actively must still be tied to a specific location. (For instance, Ginger Newson works as a Fast-Food Drive-Through Clerk at Swift and Chips. In reality the lot is just a regular community lot so we will never see her there, but her job is tied to a lot that exists.)

2 – The active career is played by the boss or manager.

Other employees will just go to work via the usual carpool. This is to avoid redundancy, since all the employees will already be present when playing the lot. I also give my self permission not to send my Sim to the career lot everyday if I don’t feel like it.

3 – There can only be one active career per household.

This rule is to ensure each round does not take too long and to preserve my sanity. It’s also more convenient since the community time mod only allows one visit to a community lot at the same time.

4 – Sims will have to go through job interviews to get hired.

This is mostly for storytelling purposes. It will become more relevant as the population increases and for more competitive careers. On the other hand, it also means that Sims can be offered a position at any level if they qualify for it, rather than having to climb through every level.

5 – Sims who got fired cannot reapply with the same employer.

This is for the sake of realism, but it will depend on circumstances of course. Some careers will have different employers so Sims will be easily able to switch between them. However, some careers will only have one employer (like the military for instance), so getting fired means they will have to pick a different track.

6 – Part-time careers are considered internships.

The level of pay feels like internship money to me. Thus those jobs will be reserved for teens and Young adults. (Elders have access to full-time careers if they need to work). Interns will have to go through job interviews like for regular careers. However, if they get fired from the internship, they will still be allowed to apply for a full-time career with the same employer in the future.

7 – Each career will have it specific rules and requirements.

The whole point of having active careers is to diversify my gameplay. Thus I came up with ideas to make each career different from the other. For instance, some careers can be performed from home (like gaming). Others will require a diploma, a driving license or a clean criminal record. Some positions might also offer special perks, like a service car or free housing.

8 – I may disregard any rule if it suits the storyline I have in mind

The purpose of those rules is to make the game more fun, not to make myself miserable! I might also change them along the way as I keep playing.
